Cervelo endurance bike 20218/17/2023 ![]() ![]() What: The more affordable version of Cervelo’s new do-it-all road bike. This more affordable version does miss a few tricks compared to the more expensive version but it’s still a highly intriguing bike. However, what we wanted to know was how the more affordable Cervelo Caledonia (without the “5”) performs, and if it too is a game-changer of a bike.Īnd so we got our hands on the new Cervelo Caledonia Ultegra Di2 for review. We’ve also shared some early impressions about how the pro-level Caledonia 5 rides. We’ve previously taken a deep dive into what the Cervelo Caledonia is and isn’t. And many of us at CyclingTips believe it’s where many road bikes will be headed in years to come. A wholly new model for 2021, the Caledonia is somewhat of a drop bar jack-of-all-trades that’s an oddly shaped peg for any existing hole. The less flex there is laterally in the frame as a rider pedals mean less power is lost from each pedal stroke, and more in transfer into creating forward motion through the crank and wheels.Heading out the door? It also provides greater comfort (through vibration dampening), as well power transfer (and therefore efficiency) compared to an alloy frame. However, this only really comes into play when travelling above 25km/hr.Ĭheck out our range of drop bar road bikes.Ĭarbon frames achieve a big advance in performance, as the material is extremely strong, light, and stiff. Whether going downhill, pushing through headwinds or picking up speed, crouching down allows you to be more aerodynamic on the bike. The shape of the handlebars, which represent a set of rams horns, are better for riders getting into crouched positions. If you’re looking for speed, you may want to start your search for a new road bike with drop bar road bikes. High-end models will utilise road bike gearing and be lighter and more streamlined, allowing for more speed.Ĭheck out our range of flatbar road bikes. This means the flat bar road bike is generally used as a commuter option due to the comfort and practicality.Įntry-level flatbar road bikes generally use mountain bike gearing and have wider tyres, which are more suited for going off curbs and gutters. Paired with the shorter top tube, this means the rider is not as 'stretched out', creating a more relaxed riding position than a traditional drop bar road bike. For the rider, this means improved handling, smoother shifting and better braking.Īt the top of the range, the most performance-focused road bikes aim to give the rider a bike that is laterally stiff, while allowing for some flex (or compliance) vertically as a way to absorb some of the bumps in the road before they reach the rider.įlat handlebars provide a more upright seating position for the rider, and improved handling at slower speeds. Each piece of material and all the components are chosen to work together to create a lighter-weight bike that is more durable when frequently ridden over long distances. They tend to be more suited to the rider’s comfort over building up speed.Īs you move up the range, the bikes become more performance-focused. Road bikes are often the choice for riders who are looking for general fitness training and riding socially, all the way up to more serious endeavours such as events and racing.Įntry level road bikes typically feature alloy frames and simple-to-use group-sets (to control gears). For the rider, this means they are lightweight, faster and more efficient. As the name suggests, road bikes are designed specifically for on-road use.
